ACHILLÉE

Scherwiller, France

The Dietrich family has a long history of farming in the village of Scherwiller. In 1999, the patriarch of the family, Yves, made the radical decision to convert the family’s estate to organic viticulture but continued selling all of their grapes to the local cooperative.

In 2016 Yves’ son's, Pierre, who has a degree in finance, and Jean, who previously worked for Ostertag, Deiss, and Jean Paul Schmitt, decided to join their father in the family business and transform it. The brothers were the first members of the family to bottle the estate’s wine and in 2003, the Achillée vineyard transitioned fully to biodynamics. The cellar, located at the center of the Alsace wine route, is the largest building in Europe made completely of straw and is carbon negative.

The Achillee vineyard encompasses 18.5 hectares of vines and six hectares of fruit trees. There are four different soil types on the grounds: sandstone, granite, schist, and gravel.
